Chelsea manager Antonio Conte says transfer market has become 'difficult'

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has said the transfer market is "difficult" as he attempts to add to his Stamford Bridge squad before the window closes next week.

Conte has signed N'Golo Kante, Michy Batshuayi and third-choice goalkeeper Eduardo as he bids to overhaul his squad, but said he wanted to make further additions.

Speaking at a news conference, he said: "I believe with this market it's very difficult. It's very difficult to believe in something.

"I have some targets, and you understand these targets are very difficult to buy.

"I repeat: this transfer market is very crazy, very difficult to reach the targets for us."

He said he still hoped "to have some more players than now before the deadline."

Chelsea have been frustrated in their pursuit of both Napoli's Kalidou Koulibaly and AC Milan's Alessio Romagnoli, with Milan knocking back a £35 million bid for the defender.

The former Juventus boss added: "I'm working with these players. I have been here for only 40 days.

"We know that we can improve a lot with work, but, also, that it's important to have the right number of players in the squad to face the other teams.

"For the ambition now, it's very difficult to tell. We know Chelsea are a great team. Every team must fight until the end for the title.

"But also we know that last season the players were not fifth or sixth, but 10th. Don't forget this."
