Man United target Jose Fonte happy at Southampton after talks - Claude Puel

Southampton boss Claude Puel says defender Jose Fonte has now agreed to stay at the club despite interest from Manchester United.

Jose Mourinho refused to discuss his interest in Portugal international Fonte last week but sources have told ESPN FC that United held informal talks with the 32-year-old earlier this month.

Arsenal had also expressed an interest but Puel said Fonte has spoken to the club and has agreed to stay at Southampton as they seek a successful season in the Premier League and Europa League.

"The situation of Jose is now ready and normal and Jose is concentrate always on his football and his team," he said.

"For Jose it was important for us, for me, to keep him in the squad because he has a good personality, a good professional and good leadership.

"It's important to keep Jose. It's normal at the start of the preseason or after the Euros to have different thoughts but now all is OK."

He added: "Jose is an important player for the team and also for the fans because they like Jose, they like the personality of Jose, and I think his work with Southampton is not finished.

"You have good opportunities for the Europa League and the different games of the Premier League, and for me it's very important to keep Jose and he's OK with this.

"He had a good discussion with the director, with the chairman, and now all is OK.

"He can be happy because Jose [will] stay and is a good player for the team."

The Daily Mirror has reported that Fonte, who is under contract until 2018, has agreed a pay rise with Southampton that will take his weekly wage from £45,000 to £70,000.

The local Daily Echo said the contract offer, which does not involve an extension, "remains on the table waiting to be signed" but the club will not sell regardless of whether Fonte puts pen to paper.
