Liverpool's Emre Can, Divock Origi injury doubts ahead of Tottenham trip

LIVERPOOL -- Jurgen Klopp has revealed that Emre Can and Divock Origi are injury doubts for Liverpool's trip to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

The pair picked up knocks in the Reds' 5-0 win over Burton Albion in the second round of the EFL Cup on Tuesday night, with Can coming off midway through the second half at the Pirelli Stadium having landed awkwardly on his ankle, and Origi sitting out the closing moments of the tie due to cramp.

Speaking at a news conference to preview Saturday's game at White Hart Lane, Klopp told reporters that he was unsure whether the duo would be able to feature in the Premier League meeting.

"There are a few players in a little bit of doubt," the Reds boss said. "We had a game on Tuesday and the next game is in two days, so we need to wait a little bit.

"[On] Emre, there's nothing really serious in the ankle where he had a few problems in the past. It should, for sure, not be long, but maybe too long for the Tottenham game, I don't know in this moment.

"It's the same with Divock. It's nothing serious really, but if you have a cramp -- whatever cramp it is, there are different levels -- you need to have a look at it too. It's not for sure that they will be available."

Klopp was also asked about transfers at Melwood on Thursday morning -- specifically about trimming the size of his squad, with a number of players appearing to be on the fringes.

The German manager maintained his stance that anything could happen before the transfer window closes, but did say the club does not have enough games this season to carry a large squad.

"You have to make decisions about the squad and, of course, until Aug. 31 everything is possible," Klopp said. "When it's Sept. 1 we'll have to analyse the situation and think about what we would do then.

"The ideal squad is a squad where everyone has the perspective to play. You need to have these players who are convinced that they have to start, they need to be angry when they don't start.

"And you need players, most of the time these are young players, who are happy to breathe the same air that we do but are strong enough in the important moments.

"That's how you build a squad for different positions, different solutions and all that stuff. In our situation, the squad should not be too big because we don't have 60-something games.

"To have a good atmosphere all the players need to see their perspective and that's what we are working for in this moment," Klopp added. "There is no reason to think about what could happen if we have too big of a squad because we are working on this side. In the end, I can't say anything about it before the deadline."
