Manchester United forward Memphis Depay still in Jose Mourinho's plans

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho wants Memphis Depay to stay at the club and has reassured the Dutchman that he still believes in him.

Depay, 22, lost his place in the United team last season and was left out of the squad for the FA Cup final victory over Crystal Palace by former boss Louis van Gaal.

He was unconvincing in preseason and not in the matchday squad for the 2-1 Community Shield win against Leicester City last weekend.

"Of course, I want Memphis to be part of my squad," Mourinho said. "I don't want to go into last season too much, but I know the player I've watched at PSV and the World Cup two years ago when he was a very young kid. Having that player in mind, I want to keep him.

"I believe in him, yes. Especially as I see a good boy, a good kid, a good professional."

Depay has attracted headlines for his off-field image, including turning up to training in a luxury super car. In October, former Netherlands striker Pierre van Hoojidonk said that someone needs to tell Depay to "quit screwing around and start playing football."

Mourinho said: "I don't care what people think. You can see him driving a nice car and you think this guy is not thinking about football, but that is not the case.

"He is frustrated with what happened last season, where he lost all confidence. But he will be back."

The United manager says that this autumn, when the club joins the Capital One Cup and the Europa League, will give Depay a chance, adding: "Everybody will play in these months and I still believe in Memphis."
