Sunderland keen to re-sign Tottenham's DeAndre Yedlin - sources

Sunderland are still trying to sign U.S. defender DeAndre Yedlin from Tottenham Hotspur, sources told ESPN FC.

Yedlin, 23, was not in the squad for Spurs' 1-1 draw at Everton on Saturday -- the opening day of the new Premier League season -- as discussions continue with hopes of a deal before the end of the transfer window on Aug. 31.

The full-back enjoyed a breakout last season on loan with the Black Cats, making 21 starts under then-manager Sam Allardyce and helping the club avoid relegation from England's top flight.

Allardyce made his desire to keep Yedlin known before leaving Sunderland to take over England's national squad, but new boss David Moyes said earlier this month that he's open to having Seattle native back.

Yedlin rejoined Spurs in July after representing his country at the Copa America Centenario, in which the Americans finished fourth. He participated in several preseason friendlies for Tottenham and even lined up at left-back rather than his normal spot on the right.

With Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier seemingly ahead of him in manager Mauricio Pochettino's plans, Yedlin is unlikely to play on the right for Tottenham and may seek another loan move to get regular football.

He signed with Tottenham after impressing at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil but remained in MLS with his hometown Seattle Sounders until early 2015, and made his lone league appearance for Spurs that Spring. Yedlin played at the University of Akron before joining the Sounders in 2013 and has 39 caps for the U.S.
