Everton close in on Swansea defender Ashley Williams - sources

Everton are closing in on the signing of Swansea and Wales captain Ashley Williams, sources close to the player have told ESPN FC.

Everton saw their opening £10 million bid for Williams, 31, rejected earlier this month but they have now come back with an improved offer.

Sources have told ESPN FC that the two clubs are close to finalising a fee in the region of £12m for Williams, with the player keen on a move to Goodison Park

Wales captain Williams was due to have a medical at the club's Finch Farm training ground on Tuesday afternoon.

Everton are in the market for defensive reinforcements after finally sanctioning John Stones' departure to Manchester City and new Toffees boss Ronald Koeman sees Williams as an ideal replacement.

Sources said Koeman believes Williams' leadership qualities and passing ability will make him a vital addition to his plans at Everton.

Williams, who helped Wales reach the semifinals at Euro 2016 this summer, has established himself as one of the most consistent defenders in the Premier League since helping Swansea win promotion to the top flight in 2011.

Everton are set to offer Williams a four-year deal and he is expected to hold talks and undergo a medical later on Tuesday once the two clubs have ironed out the final details of his transfer fee.
