Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen to have medical at Roma

Barcelona have confirmed that defender Thomas Vermaelen is to undergo a medical with Roma.

The club said on their official Twitter account: "With the Club's permission, Thomas Vermaelen has travelled to Rome to undergo a medical with AS Roma."

On Saturday, Roma boss Luciano Spalletti said that he hoped to sign the former Arsenal player.

Vermaelen, 30, joined Barca from the Gunners in 2014 but has struggled with injuries throughout his time at the Camp Nou.

Spalletti said Roma sporting director Walter Sabatini had opened talks over the Belgium international.

"Walter is working on this deal, although for now we cannot say that it is done," he told Sky Sport.

He added: "Vermaelen is a player with experience and quality. He can build the play from the back and has great character.

"These players are used to playing important European matches."
