Radja Nainggolan will stay at Roma no matter Champions League fate

Roma midfielder Radja Nainggolan has said he is staying with the Serie A club no matter what happens over the next few weeks.

Nainggolan has been linked with a move to several Premier League clubs, and speculation surrounding his future would only rise were the Giallorossi to fail to qualify for the Champions League group stage.

They will discover their playoff opponents in a draw in Nyon on Friday, but the Belgium international says his future in the Italian capital will not hinge on whether the side remain in Europe's elite competition.

"I chose to stay, to remain here," Nainggolan told the club's official website. "Nothing will change, not even the outcome of the playoff. I'm definitely staying with Roma even without the Champions League."

Speaking to reporters ahead of Roma's friendly against Montreal Impact, Nainggolan also revealed how he has been trying to convince Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen to join him in the Eternal City.

The 30-year-old has hardly featured for the Blaugrana since joining from Arsenal in 2014, and with Roma on the lookout for a defender, Nainggolan believes he fits the bill perfectly.

"He's a player who has already proven himself in his career and if you play for Barca, then it must mean you've had some good seasons," Nainggolan said of his compatriot. "He's had a few physical problems, but if I have to say who impressed me during Euro 2016, I have to think of him.

"He impressed me a lot because even if he didn't play, he showed he's in optimal shape. I've spoken to him and I've asked him if he'd like to come here and he told me he would consider this possibility. Then again, it's his choice and not mine."
