Lukas Podolski intends to stay with Galatasaray amid Turkey turmoil

Lukas Podolski has no intention of leaving Galatasaray amidst a difficult political situation in Turkey.

Podolski, 31, took part in a "Champions for Charity" football match on Wednesday in honour of race driver Michael Schumacher in Mainz.

Asked after the game whether he will continue playing in Turkey despite political situation, he said: "Yes, I didn't claim anything else. The media can speculate if they want. I'm looking forward to my season and being back on the pitch."

The former Bayern Munich and Arsenal player joined Galatasaray in 2015 after a disappointing six-month loan spell at Inter in Serie A. The midfielder won the Turkish league cup in his first season with the Istanbul-based team.

Podolski scored 13 goals in 30 league matches, earning him a call-up to Low's Euro 2016 squad. However, the Polish-born winger only managed 18 minutes in a 3-0 win over Slovakia at the tournament.

Podolski's status in Turkey was called into question following the decision of his national team colleague Mario Gomez to leave Besiktas this summer.

The 31-year-old striker wrote on his Facebook page: "The reason for this is completely down to the political situation! There are no sporting or any other reasons that have made me make this decision. It is purely down to the terrible events that happened in the last few days."

Gomez joined Besiktas on loan from Fiorentina in 2015, where he still has a contract until 2017. Supporters of the Black Eagles started a campaign on twitter under the hashtag #ComeBackMarioGomez to try to convince the forward to stay.

The striker scored 26 times 33 league games, leading his side to a 14th national title.

Whether Gomez will stay in Fiorentina remains to be seen. He's on a lucrative contract, according to the club's executive president Mario Cognigni.
