Kieran Trippier happy at Tottenham amid Southampton link

MELBOURNE, Australia -- Tottenham right-back Kieran Trippier has no plans to leave the club this summer and says he is looking forward to playing in the Champions League.

Trippier played second fiddle to England international Kyle Walker last season, making just six appearances in the Premier League after joining Tottenham from relegated Burnley.

The 25-year-old has been linked with a summer move to Southampton but insists he is happy at Spurs.

"I have not heard anything. I've been in Australia, so I don't know where all this came from -- it certainly hasn't come from me," Trippier told reporters after playing 90 minutes in Spurs' 2-1 defeat to Juventus in Melbourne.

"I've been down here just focusing on training and playing. I'm looking forward to the new season with Tottenham and playing in the Champions League. I am really happy at the club. We have great lads, a great manager and great staff all around the place and I am not thinking of leaving."

Despite limited minutes in the Premier League, Trippier started all 10 of Spurs' Europa League outings last season, including both legs of the round of 16 against Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund.

Spurs return to the Champions League this season and Trippier, who came through the ranks at Manchester City but left for Turf Moor without making a senior appearance, is hoping for more new experiences.

"I learnt so much last season, especially about the quality of player we have in our squad," he added. "I also learnt a lot about my own position. It was a great experience for me to play in the Europa League against teams from different places with different ideas on how to play the game.

"I would love to play in the Champions League if picked. It is down to the manager obviously. But my aim again will be to make sure I am ready to play in whatever game I'm asked to play in, whether it be in Europe or at home.

"I was bit young then [at Manchester City] and, with Micah Richards and Pablo Zabaleta ahead of me, I had some pretty tough competition. As a young lad still learning the game, I used to watch them play in the Champions League and think to myself: 'That is where I want to be.'

"I am so pleased I now have this second opportunity to play in the tournament with Tottenham. As a footballer you want play as the highest level you can and the Champions League would certainly tick that box. I now have that chance with Tottenham and I want to take it."

Trippier was joined in defence by three debutants -- 18-year-old Cameron Carter-Vickers and 20-year-olds Dominic Ball and Will Miller -- in Tuesday's defeat to Juve in the International Champions Cup.

Spurs were 2-0 down inside 15 minutes after some shoddy defending but Trippier believes the experience of playing an elite European club will benefit the players.

"It was a good test for us all. We have a lot of young lads who have travelled over -- it was great for some of them to get some game time. These are the type of teams we are going to be playing against in the Champions League this season," he said.

"Even though they had a lot of players missing like we did, you could see the step up in class to most of the teams we played in the Europa League last season. They had quality running right through their ranks.

"It reminded us the Champions League is going to be a tough competition for us this season, no matter who we are playing."
