Paris Saint-Germain target new striker to support Edinson Cavani

Paris Saint-Germain boss Unai Emery wants to sign another striker to help support star forward Edinson Cavani.

Cavani, 29, looks set to be PSG's main frontman this season after the club's record goal-scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic left for Manchester United.

Emery, 44, has promised to restore Cavani to his more favoured central role in the wake of Ibrahimovic's departure. But the PSG coach is worried about a lack of cover for the Uruguay international and has already had a discussion about it with the French champions' new director of football, Patrick Kluivert.

"I need to know the team, notably the young players, to know if we have to incorporate new signings," Emery told L'Equipe. "Cavani has played a lot on the left. He should feel that he will be centre-forward but he needs other players with him in attack... if Cavani gets injured, for example, it's necessary to have a player capable of playing for PSG.

"The criteria is to recruit a good individual for a big club like Paris."

Emery appeared to rule out signing AC Milan's Colombian attacker Carlos Bacca, who he worked with at Sevilla, on the basis that PSG already have the maximum permitted four non-EU players in their squad.

Meanwhile, Emery promised that his side would try to play an attractive brand of football next season.

"In football, the most important thing is to win," he added. "But for me it's just as important that the supporters might get a thrill from the team's play.

"If you have possession but you do nothing but passes, the fans are going to fall asleep. Possession is good but it's only a tool. You then have to add movement, intensity and energy."
