Unai Emery wants Blaise Matuidi to stay with Paris Saint-Germain but admits there have been talks about the France international midfielder's future.
Sources told ESPN FC earlier this month that Manchester United are interested in France international Matuidi, who is yet to return to preseason training following his participation in Euro 2016.
Emery says he would be reluctant to sell the 29-year-old but acknowledged that he a sale is possible.
"Matuidi is a fantastic footballer and he belongs to PSG," Emery told a news conference ahead of PSG's International Champions Cup game against Inter Milan. "We're waiting for him. He is a great footballer and logically I don't want to dispense with great footballers.
"We've spoken about how there are a lot of midfielders and that there could be a situation in a given moment that the player could leave, but of course, I as coach am behind him. The circumstances could change that, but in principle, it's not what I want."
Emery arrived at PSG this summer after winning the Europa League three seasons in a row with Sevilla, and he hopes to better that success in France.
"For me it's a challenge and a step up in my career," he said. "The last few years in Sevilla and winning the Europa League gave a new dimension to Sevilla -- to the club, to the players and to me, the coach.
"That success now needs to continue and the opportunity that Paris Saint-Germain has given me will help me to improve, with a great team, to reach even more ambitious heights."
