Stoke City lead race for West Brom striker Saido Berahino - source

Stoke City are leading the race to sign West Bromwich Albion striker Saido Berahino, sources close to the club have told ESPN FC.

Berahino's future at West Brom has been the subject of speculation for the last 12 months and it will again come under scrutiny during this summer's transfer window.

The 22-year-old was involved a bitter transfer wrangle last summer with Tottenham seeing several offers rejected for the forward.

West Brom's refusal to agree a deal with Tottenham led to Berahino handing in a transfer request on deadline day, but he has since repaired the breakdown in relations at The Hawthorns.

Berahino is now entering the final year of his contract at with the Baggies and although West Brom would like to tie him down a new deal they are ready to cash-in on him this summer rather than risk seeing him run down his contract.

Berahino scored only four goals in the Premier League last season after finding himself in and out of Tony Pulis' starting XI.

Watford have expressed an interest in taking Berahino to Vicarage Road this summer, but Stoke are confident of winning the race for the player with Tottenham seemingly no longer pursuing the forward.

Stoke boss Mark Hughes is looking to bring in a high-profile striker this summer as he looks to improve his squad and he sees Berahino as someone who can be a consistent goalscorer in his side.
