Borussia Dortmund delay Ilkay Gundogan contract talks

Borussia Dortmund are postponing contract talks with Ilkay Gundogan until he is "more or less recovered" from his knee injury, the club's CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has said.

Germany international Gundogan, 25, dislocated his knee cap in training earlier this month, which ruled him out of Euro 2016 and could see him out of action until October.

The deep-lying playmaker has just over 12 months left on his current deal and was widely reported to have been set for a summer switch to Manchester City before sustaining the injury.

Dortmund said last week that they are unwilling to go into the new season with Gundogan's future undecided and also announced they will not offer him a short-term deal, as has been the case in the two previous summers.

Speaking to kicker on Thursday, however, Watzke said they are delaying the Gundogan decision for now.

"We will postpone the plans until he is more or less recovered," the Dortmund chief said.

Dortmund have already confirmed that captain Mats Hummels will join Bayern Munich in the summer and Watzke added: "We will lose one important player in Mats, and maybe even two in Ilkay Gundogan."

Dortmund, though, have all but ruled out selling midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the upcoming transfer period.

The Armenia international, like Gundogan, is under contract until 2017 and has yet to agree to a new deal, but Watzke said: "I am optimistic that we can extend long-term with 'Micki' and, apart from this, his contract runs for another year."

Bild, meanwhile, reports that the contract talks between Dortmund and Mino Raiola, the 27-year-old's representative, still hinge on the inclusion of a buy-out clause.

The German tabloid adds that Chelsea are keen on Mkhitaryan.
