Granit Xhaka close to signing for Arsenal from Gladbach - reports

Arsenal are closing in on the signing of Granit Xhaka from Borussia Monchengladbach, according to reports in England and Germany.

Xhaka, 23, has been linked with a move to Arsenal with sources telling ESPN FC in April that the club are confident of securing a deal.

The Gunners were looking to land the midfielder for a fee of £30 million (€38m) but Rheinische Post reports they have had to increase their offer to an initial payment of £33.9m (€43m) plus add-ons.

The Daily Telegraph also reports that a deal is close although personal terms have yet to be agreed with the player.

Earlier this week, Xhaka said he has yet to receive an offer from Arsenal, explaining: "What happens is not entirely down to me."

The Switzerland international has played in 107 Bundesliga games since joining Gladbach from Basel, the same club Arsenal signed Mohamed Elneny from in January, as a 19-year-old in 2012.

He has also appeared in nine DFB Pokal matches and in 32 games in the Europa League and Champions League.

Although he has scored just six times and assisted two, he has been influential in his deep midfield position.

This season he has completed 85 percent of his passes and has played an average of 81.1 passes per match, the third most in the Bundesliga behind Bayern duo Xabi Alonso and David Alaba.

In his four years in Germany, he has been sent off the pitch five times, but only once with a straight red card. This term, Xhaka was twice sent off with two yellow cards and once with a straight red card.
