Bayern Munich's Medhi Benatia eyes return to Serie A if Hummels signs

Bayern Munich defender Medhi Benatia is contemplating a return to Italy should Mats Hummels move to the Allianz Arena.

Benatia, 29, joined Bayern from AS Roma two years ago in a €28 million deal but his time at the Bundesliga leaders has been best by injury.

This season the Morocco international has only started 12 matches for Bayern, and appeared in a total of 19 games in all competitions.

Hummels has told Borussia Dortmund that he wants to leave the club and go back to Bayern, though a deal has yet to be agreed between the two clubs. If Hummels does make the move, then Benatia's first-team chances will be further limited.

Speaking to Sky Italia, Benatia has now said that he could head back to Serie A -- where he has played for Udinese as well as Roma.

"Bayern is in talks with Hummels," the defender said. "If I should leave then I will leave. But first of all I want to finish this season well. We can win the Treble."

In an interview with kicker last month, only days before the Hummels rumours emerged, Benatia said he would let Bayern decided his future with his contract still having three more years to run.

But Benatia, who has also been linked with a move to Arsenal, is open to a return to Roma despite leaving on bad terms. He added: "I would certainly do it. Everyone knows that Rome is a special place for me. So many people have remained in my heart."
