Mesut Ozil's 'only focus on Arsenal,' players 'botched' title challenge

Mesut Ozil says he is focused on Arsenal but has not ruled out a return to Spain or Germany in the future.

Ozil says the Gunners "botched it ourselves" this season as they trail Premier League leaders Leicester City by 11 points, failing to mount a serious challenge again.

The Germany international, 27, joined Arsenal from Real Madrid for £42.5 million in September 2013, and has won two FA Cups with the Gunners.

Ozil, who played for Schalke and Werder Bremen before moving to La Liga, has provided 18 league assists so far this campaign, only two away from Thierry Henry's all-time Premier League record, and he has been one of their players of the season.

However, when asked by spox.com whether he could imagine a return to Madrid, where his idol Zinedine Zidane is now head coach, Ozil remained coy about his future.

"Zidane was an outstanding player, who not only played football but lived this sport," Ozil said. "I also got to know him after his active career as a modest person, someone who lends a hand. But that should not say anything about my future. I currently only focus on Arsenal.

"Arsene Wenger played a major role in my decision to join choose Arsenal. He really wanted me to come to London. Everyone knows he is an exceptional coach. He is always hungry for success, has a wealth of experience and takes time for the players."

And when asked if he could imagine a possible return to Spain or Germany, he added: "You should never say never in football. Right now, I only focus on the Premier League season and after that on the European Championship. We'll see what happens in the next season or the one after."

While Ozil said the Gunners haven't given up on the title, he admitted they hurt themselves by failing to beat some teams in the lower half of the table.

"Looking at our season so far, we have to be honest and admit that we botched it ourselves," Ozil added on spox.com. "Against the smaller teams we have not played to our potential. That gets punished immediately in the Premier League.

"Despite that we still have a chance. We have to hope that Leicester and Tottenham slip up and then make the most of it."

Arsenal have held 1-0 leads in games against West Bromwich Albion, Norwich and Swansea this season but came away with just one point from those three games. They have also struggled with injuries, and Ozil reiterated his belief that the club must be active in the transfer window to avoid being left behind next season.

"Because of the new TV deal even more top players will come to the Premier League," he added. "The teams will be better and have deeper squads, Arsenal must also strengthen.

"This season has shown that we struggle when we are missing a number of key players. We cannot allow this to happen again next season."
