Juventus could use Paul Pogba sale to rebuild, like after Zidane left - Lippi

Marcello Lippi says Juventus could continue to be successful even if they sell Paul Pogba this summer.

The Turin club have reportedly put a €100-million asking price on the France midfielder, having rejected a reported €90m for him last summer.

While losing one of their star players would be a setback, Lippi says the funds earned would enable them to rebuild a squad strong enough to succeed -- just like he did when Zinedine Zidane was sold.

"I remember when I went back to Juve [after a spell coaching Inter Milan] and [president Gianni] Agnelli told me that he was going to sell Zidane," Lippi said to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"I didn't agree with it to start with, but then I was reassured that the money we earned would be a lot and, above all, that it would be reinvested. Indeed, we succeeded in building a winning team with it."

Zidane left Juve for Real Madrid in 2001, but the Turin-based club nevertheless picked up their first Scudetto in four years without the Frenchman, clinching the title again the following season, when they also reached the final of the Champions League.

If the Bianconeri's asking price is met and Pogba were to be sold this summer, current Juve coach Massimiliano Allegri could look forward to an unprecedented transfer fund.

Demanding what would be close to a world-record fee is not disproportionate either, according to Pogba's agent Mino Raiola, who also says the 23-year-old does not necessarily have to leave the Serie A leaders.

"Paul's surprised even me in these years, in a positive way," he told La Gazzetta. "His strength and serenity have helped him to overcome some criticism at the start of the season. Juve have budgeted to earn €100m from an eventual sale and we're on the same wavelength.

"If nobody can offer him an adequate project, then he'd be better off staying. In fact, we're even ready to renew his contract."
