Peter Odemwingie to stay at Stoke after turning down Marseille loan move

Peter Odemwingie's proposed move to Marseille appears to be off and the player has opted to stay with Stoke City.

Stoke manager Mark Hughes revealed in his prematch news conference ahead of Tuesday' trip to Manchester United that the forward had been given permission to speak to a club but rejected the move.

ESPN FC sources have revealed that Marseille are that club, with Sunderland striker Steven Fletcher reportedly on the verge of a move there too.

Odemwingie has found himself well down the pecking order at Stoke this season, making just seven appearances so far this term.

The former West Bromwich Albion and Cardiff City player started against Crystal Palace in the FA Cup at the weekend, but with Stoke now out of the competition his first-team opportunities are set to be even more limited.

Odemwingie is in the final six months of his contract at the Britannia Stadium and Stoke were happy to let him move on to trim their squad and reduce their wage bill.

While confirming the collapse of the Odemwingie deal, Hughes didn't rule out the prospect of players leaving the Britannia before the end of the day.

He said: "There was an interest from a club in Peter Odemwingie, but I had a conversation with Peter and he didn't feel it was right for him to leave at this point in time. So that one's gone away.

"If we are able to get another over the line then we may look at some opportunities if we feel that we can allow people to go. But we won't know about that until the deals conclude."

Hughes did suggest that goalkeeper Shay Given could go out on loan once the Football League emergency loan window opens later this month.

Given is currently on his way back from injury but has no prospect of first-team action at Stoke with Jack Butland now the undisputed No. 1. But the Republic of Ireland international will be desperate for game time ahead of this summer's European Championship.
