Atletico Madrid want to keep Fernando Torres - club president Enrique Cerezo

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has said the club would like to keep hold of striker Fernando Torres.

Torres, 31, returned to Atletico on loan from AC Milan in January 2015 but the Spain international has made over half his La Liga and Champions League appearances this season as a substitute.

The former Liverpool and Chelsea forward is out of contract in the summer and so far Atletico boss Diego Simeone has been evasive when asked about whether he would like the player to extend his stay in Madrid.

The situation has not been helped by the fact that FIFA has banned Atletcio from signing any players during the next two transfer windows for breaching youth transfer regulations.

The Spanish club are set to appeal that decision, however, and Cerezo said he hoped that Torres would remain in Madrid.

"Fernando Torres is, for the moment, an Atletico player," Cerezo told French radio station RMC.

"We have other problems to take care of day-to-day between the match against Barcelona [this weekend] and the problem with FIFA so you don't know what's going to happen.

"What I can say is that Fernando Torres is a star. We have several of them at Atletico and we want to keep him."

Cerezo also indicated that he was banking on Simeone and French attacker Antoine Griezmann staying at the club for many years.

"First of all, Griezmann has a long-term contract," Cerezo said. "No one has come to us about a possible transfer.

"For me he's a world star of football -- he still has a lot of time to do with us.

"I think he'll allow Atletico to go as high as possible and Atletico will allow him to go as high as possible on a personal level."
