          Andros Townsend completes transfer to Newcastle from Tottenham

          Newcastle have confirmed the signing of Andros Townsend from Tottenham on a five-and-a-half-year deal.

          Townsend, 24, cost 18th-placed Newcastle around £12 million, according to Press Association Sport, and could make his debut in the Premier League match at Everton on Feb. 3.

          A number of clubs including Watford, West Bromwich Albion and Southampton were all linked with the England international, but Newcastle were determined to win the race for the winger with Steve McClaren making him one of his top targets this month.

          The Magpies had a loan offer and a £10.5m bid rejected earlier in January.

          "I'm delighted to be here," Townsend told his new club's official website. "Newcastle United is a fantastic club with great fans, a great stadium and great tradition.

          "As soon as I heard Newcastle were interested in me, there was only one place I wanted to go so I can't wait to get started."

          Newcastle boss McClaren added: "Bringing Andros to the club is a great signing. He is a very good talent who is a current England international and should be one for years to come, too.

          "Andros is a winger with an old-fashioned style. He can play on the right or the left, is two-footed, quick, very direct and loves taking on defenders and crossing the ball.

          "He feels he has a lot to prove and I can't wait to see him do that in a Newcastle shirt."

          The winger has played just 64 minutes of Premier League football this season, but has been keeping fit with Spurs' under-21 side, having been frozen out by head coach Mauricio Pochettino following an altercation with fitness coach Nathan Gardiner in November.

          Townsend, who last played for Spurs' first team in October, made his debut for the club against Charlton in the FA Cup in January 2011 and went on to make 93 appearances in all competitions, scoring 10 goals.

          After nine different loan spells, he made his breakthrough under coach Andre Villas-Boas in the 2013-14 season.

          Townsend has 10 England caps, scoring three times for the Three Lions, and will hope the move to Newcastle will boost his chances of making Roy Hodgson's squad for Euro 2016.
