Mauricio Pochettino: Andros Townsend Tottenham future is club's decision

LONDON -- Tottenham coach Mauricio Pochettino says it is up to the club to decide Andros Townsend's future, but admits that the winger "wants to play."

Townsend, 24, has not featured for Spurs since the Europa League defeat to Anderlecht in October, and was frozen out by Pochettino following a spat with fitness coach Nathan Gardiner after the 3-1 win over Aston Villa in November.

The winger -- who has played just 64 minutes of Premier League football this season -- is reportedly on the verge of a loan move to Newcastle United until the end of the season, and Pochettino said the England international could leave White Hart Lane.

"I am not involved in negotiations with the club. I am head coach," Pochettino told a news conference on Tuesday.

"It's true that Andros is in a position where he doesn't play too much but all players are involved in our squad, only we need to wait.

"Andros has not played in the last few months and he wants to play. If the possibility arrives, it's always for the club to decide."

Asked about the chances of Townsend leaving, Pochettino replied: "I don't know. It's all about rumours, nothing is clear."

Another player who has struggled for game time this season is Nabil Bentaleb, who returned from a three-month injury absence against Monaco in December but has since only featured as a substitute in last week's FA Cup third-round clash with Leicester City.

The Algerian, a first-team regular last season, failed to make the bench for the Premier League games against the Foxes and Sunderland last week, and Pochettino says he is down the midfield pecking order at present.

"From the beginning, he missed 17, 18 games with an injury and the team grew up and different players had the possibility to play and show quality [such as] Eric Dier, Mousa Dembele or Tom Carroll," Pochettino said.

"We have a lot of midfielders. But we keep a very good relationship with Nabil but it's true that if he works in the next few weeks, he always will have the possibility to play his real quality.

"It's about time for him to show he deserves to play. Always it's about football decision and performance."

Spurs could reportedly share Wembley with rivals Chelsea during the 2017-18 season, while both clubs are building new stadiums.

Pochettino said the national stadium was an option for his club, but refused to say if he would prefer it to stadium:mk -- MK Dons' home ground -- which has also been suggested.

"I don't hear anything but you know that for us always it could be possible to play at Wembley," he added. "A good possibility for us, there's no news but playing at Wembley is maybe one of the options for us in the future.

"It's our option to play at Wembley but I don't hear that we will maybe share with Chelsea. I don't know -- no communication from my chairman, we didn't speak about that. Maybe we will speak in the future about that but not yet.

"It's a club decision and there are different possibilities but we'd love to play at Wembley because it's in London, it's close to here, it's a good option. But why not play at Milton Keynes? It's a good option too."
