Liverpool's Joe Allen uncertain about being offered new contract

Liverpool midfielder Joe Allen admits he is unsure as to whether he will be offered a contract extension by the club.

Allen, 25, held talks with the Reds regarding a new deal in March of last year while Brendan Rodgers was still in charge at Anfield.

Since then, however, Rodgers has been replaced by Jurgen Klopp and the discussions have stalled, with Allen -- who has 18 months remaining on his current contract -- uncertain what the future now holds for him.

"That's gone very quiet [the contract talks]. I'm not too sure really," Allen is quoted as saying by The Guardian. "I've only made one league start this season, so I want to play more. I think that's obvious for any player in that situation.

"From my point of view, it's just about knuckling down, doing my job and giving my best, which is always what I do."

Allen did, however, start for Liverpool in their 1-0 Capital One Cup semifinal first-leg defeat of Stoke on Tuesday.

The midfielder felt his side produced an impressive display, given they came into the game off the back of a 2-0 loss to West Ham.

"We knew we needed to respond at Stoke with a good performance first and foremost, with a performance that was full of commitment and desire, and we certainly got that," Allen said. "There's been a couple of disappointing results recently and the work's on now for us to get consistent and turn it around.

"It shows what we're capable of. You look at our position in the table and the points we've picked up, and as a club it hurts us because I think we're better than that. We've got the self-belief that we can do much better and I think this kind of performance shows that.

"I think people have been a bit slow to give Stoke credit the last couple of years, I think people still associate them with the team they used to be but they've got some really good players. You see with some of the wins they've had this season what they're capable of -- we knew it was going to be a very, very tough game.

"So it makes it extra pleasing to get that clean sheet, go a goal ahead and now the onus is on them to come to Anfield and take the game to us."
