Joleon Lescott joins Aston Villa from West Bromwich Albion

Aston Villa have completed the signing of Joleon Lescott from West Bromwich Albion.

Lescott, who is expected to form a central defensive partnership with Micah Richards at Villa Park, has signed a two-year contract after spending just over 12 months with the Baggies.

The defender passed a medical on Tuesday and the move ends a long transfer chase for Villa, who wanted to sign him before his move to West Brom last summer.

Villa boss Tim Sherwood told his club's official website: "I'm delighted to bring Joleon on board.

"He's a player who has great Premier League experience and he'll be a huge help to the younger members of our squad."

Sources told ESPN FC last week that Villa had agreed a fee for the 33-year-old, who had entered the final year of his contract at The Hawthorns.

The former Everton and Manchester City centre-back was allowed to leave West Brom after they signed James Chester and Jonny Evans this summer. He was also behind Gareth McAuley and Jonas Olsson in the pecking order but did start Saturday's 1-0 Premier League win at Stoke.

Lescott made 39 appearances, scoring once, for West Brom after joining from City on a free transfer last summer.

His arrival at Villa on Tuesday follows that of 18-year-old goalkeeper Matija Sarkic, who joined from Anderlecht.
