Alexandre Pato keen on Sao Paulo stay despite Tottenham Hotspur links

Reported Tottenham Hotspur target Alexandre Pato has said he wants to stay at Sao Paulo, but acknowledged that may not be his decision to make.

Corinthians forward Pato has been on loan at Sao Paulo since last year but his parent club's chairman, Roberto de Andrade, said earlier this summer that he was eager to cash in on the 25-year-old.

Earlier this month, sources told ESPN FC that Corinthians are ready to sell Pato for €10 million (£7.2m) and the former AC Milan star was keen on a move to the Premier League.

Globoesporte then reported on Friday that entrepreneur Giuliano Bertolucci was in London to try to negotiate a deal, with Spurs said to be the main interested party.

But Pato said after Saturday's 3-0 win over Ponte Preta that he would like to remain at Sao Paulo.

Asked whether that would be his final match for the Brazilian club, he told reporters afterwards: "I don't know. I think today, tomorrow, I will find out what's going to happen.

"I would like to stay, but we'll see tomorrow. I have to wait and see. My desire is to stay, but it's not entirely down to me."

Asked about links with Tottenham, he said: "I don't know."

Sao Paulo boss Juan Carlos Osorio said it would be a "shame" to lose the forward but accepted that it would be difficult to retain him.

"Alexandre is, in my opinion, the best striker in Brazilian football," he said. "I think it would be impossible for there to be no offers.

"It's hard to understand how he could still play here in Brazil and at Sao Paulo, because he belongs to Corinthians and Corinthians would surely not want us to have such a star in our squad."

Sao Paulo board member Ataide Gil Guerreiro told UOL Esporte he had spoken to the player and his agent and that, as of Saturday morning, there had been no bid. But he acknowledged that the English transfer window will not close until Tuesday.
