Manchester United summer transfer business could be over - sources

Manchester United not bringing in any more new players in the summer transfer window is very possible after manager Louis van Gaal ended the club's interest in Pedro, sources have told ESPN FC.

United are no longer trying to sign summer target Pedro from Barcelona, with Chelsea now closing in on his signature.

Pedro has a €30 million (£22m) release clause in his contract at the Camp Nou and United considered that a reasonable amount.

But although the Spaniard is a player manager Van Gaal liked, the fact he opted not to activate the buyout clause over the last few weeks is a sign the Dutchman harboured doubts about whether to purchase him, according to sources.

United have made five signings and paid £84m this summer, and that could be the end of their business before the window closes on Sept. 1.

Van Gaal said last week that Pedro had the qualities he was looking for in a signing.

He had stated he wanted more speed and creativity after selling Angel Di Maria and, when confronted with the suggestion that it was a description that fitted Pedro, replied: "I hear and Pedro is a player like that. So write it."

But United consider Memphis Depay, who scored twice against club Brugge on Tuesday, as a replacement for Di Maria.

Pedro has scored 99 goals for Barcelona but has been considering his future after losing his place following the 2014 arrival of Luis Suarez.
