Chelsea sign Ghana left-back Baba Rahman from Augsburg

Chelsea have completed the signing of Baba Rahman from Augsburg.

Chelsea have been in the market for a left-back since allowing Filipe Luis to return to Atletico Madrid, and Ghana international Rahman, 21, completed a medical with the Premier League champions last week.

Augsburg said the clubs had agreed not to disclose the fee but media reports had suggested Chelsea would pay around €30 million.

Said Rahman to Chelsea's club website after the move was confirmed, "I am very happy to sign for Chelsea, one of the biggest clubs in the world, and I can't wait to train with my new team-mates and very much looking forward to working with them and Mr Mourinho.

"I am also looking forward to having the opportunity to meet the fans as soon as possible."

Rahman joined Augsburg for €2.5m from second tier club Greuther Furth last summer, and the club's sporting executive, Stefan Reuter, told their official website: "Abdul Baba Rahman has developed tremendously in his year with us and made a great step forwards.

"This is not just a reward for his achievements but for our work too if international giants like Chelsea are interested in signing him.

"We wish him well in England."

Rahman himself said he had been preparing for a long-term stay at Augsburg when he arrived but had changed his mind when Chelsea became interested.

He added: "I would like to thank everyone, the coaches and fans, for their support in the last year."

When asked about the move following Chelsea's 3-0 defeat at Manchester City, Blues manager Jose Mourinho noted he knew the move was close to completion during the game.

"I know we were working on that. I know we were very close. I know we did a medical already. I don't have an OK it is done."

Mourinho also confirmed the need for Rahman in aiding a struggling defensive unit. "It is important because [Rahman] is a left-back, he can compete with [Cesar Azpilicueta]. At the same time, Azpil can compete with [Branislav] Ivanovic for the right-back position, so he replaces Filipe Luis in the balance of the squad."
