Aston Villa hopeful of completing deal for Tottenham's Emmanuel Adebayor

Aston Villa are confident of securing a deal for Tottenham striker Emmanuel Adebayor, sources have told ESPN FC.

Earlier this month, ESPN FC revealed that Villa were targeting Adebayor, and now talks over a loan with a view to a permanent deal are at an advanced stage.

Aston Villa boss Tim Sherwood sees Togo international Adebayor as an ideal replacement for Christian Benteke following the Belgian's switch to Liverpool.

He thrived under Sherwood's management at Tottenham in the second half of the 2013-14 season, scoring 11 goals.

On Monday, Villa assistant boss Ray Wilkins told talkSPORT: "I can only talk for myself, but I'm hoping there is [a chance to do a deal] because when Adebayor wants to play he is extremely effective.

"He knows the Premier League inside out, so he would be a good addition for us."

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is happy to let Adebayor move on, as he does not figure in his long-term plans and has not been training with the first-team squad in pre-season.

Villa, who announced the signing of striker Jordan Ayew from French club Lorient on Monday, hope they can tie up a move for Adebayor in the next 48 hours.
