Man United target Sergio Ramos closer to new Real Madrid deal - report

Manchester United target Sergio Ramos is reportedly edging closer to agreeing a new deal at Real Madrid after meeting with club president Florentino Perez.

Ramos, 29, met with Perez on Sunday afternoon in Guangzhou, China, where Real are training as part of their summer tour.

The player's brother and agent, Rene Ramos, and club general director Jose Angel Sanchez were also present.

The meeting had been scheduled several weeks ago with Perez eager to convince Ramos to remain at the club, and Marca reports that he is now much closer to prolonging his deal than joining United.

New Real coach Rafa Benitez confirmed the meeting took place but offered no information on the outcome of the discussions.

Benitez said on the club's official website: "I've been focused on training and I haven't been able to have a chat with either Florentino Perez or Ramos.

"Florentino told me that they were going to talk at lunch. Ramos looked good to me, as always."

Ramos reportedly asked Real several weeks ago to listen to offers from United after 10 years at the club.

The Spain international was reported to be unhappy that he had not been offered a contract extension and felt undervalued by the club.

Marca reported that Ramos told Perez at Sunday's meeting that he felt underappreciated and was upset that his club had kept silent when Barcelona presidential candidate Jordi Majo claimed he had been offered the opportunity to sign the defender to boost his election campaign.

However, Ramos is said to have told Perez that he wants to retire at Real and that feeling valued by the club -- rather than money -- is the key to him extending his stay beyond 2017.

Benitez, who replaced Carlo Ancelotti at the end of the season, has said on numerous occasions that it is vital that Ramos, who is set to take over from Iker Casillas as club captain, remains at the club.

Marca reports that negotiations regarding his contract extension will resume once Real return to Spain after their summer tour.
