Patrick Bamford signs new Chelsea contract, joins Crystal Palace on loan

It remains to be seen if Patrick Bamford, the winner of the 2014-15 Player Of The Year in the Championship with Middlesbrough, will get a chance to shine with parent club Chelsea.
Patrick Bamford will now have first-team chances in the Premier League with Chelsea.

Chelsea forward Patrick Bamford has completed a season-long loan move to Crystal Palace after signing a new three-year deal at Stamford Bridge.

Bamford, 21, won the Championship Player of the Year award for his displays at Middlesbrough last season, and has committed his long-term future to Premier League champions Chelsea.

He scored 19 goals as Boro lost the playoff final to Norwich, and will now look to prove he can replicate such form in the top flight with Palace.

Sources told ESPN FC on Monday that the Eagles were closing in on the England under-21 international, who has spent time away from Stamford Bridge with temporary spells at MK Dons and Derby having originally signed for Chelsea from the Nottingham Forest academy.

Bamford told the club's official website: "I was quite keen to stay close to London this time and Palace were actually my first choice, but I didn't realise they were keen to start with. Then, when I met with the manager, he put forward his plans and it was an easy decision.

"I like to get in behind the defence. I'd say I'm deceptively quick, but I'm sure they'll make their own minds up! I do like to score goals, so hopefully I'll be able to do that a lot here.

"I want to try to establish myself in a Premier League team and if I can do that here then it would be great for me and great for the club."

Speaking about his new Chelsea deal, Bamford told the champions' official website: "I'm delighted to sign a new contract with Chelsea. My dream has always been to be part of this club for the long term.

"Chelsea have been fantastic with my development and joining Crystal Palace for this season on loan is the next step for me in my career."

Bamford was keen to fight for a first-team spot at Chelsea while Middlesbrough were hoping to re-sign Bamford for next season, but Chelsea preferred to send the 21-year-old out on loan to a Premier League club to aid his development.

A number of clubs, including West Ham, Norwich City had shown an interest in Bamford, but Palace have won the race for the talented forward.

Palace boss Alan Pardew has been looking to add to his attacking options and sources told ESPN FC that he has promised Chelsea that Bamford will play a key role in his plans for next season by playing regularly at Selhurst Park.

Pardew added: "It's a coup for Crystal Palace ahead of a host of rivals. I'm so pleased he chose us over others to help develop his game. Hopefully he will be a star for us, Chelsea and -- of course -- England.

"Patrick is one of England's brightest prospects and I will liaise with Jose [Mourinho], Gareth [Southgate] and Dan Ashworth on his progress during this important year in his career."
