Raheem Sterling to return to Liverpool training after illness - sources

Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling is set to return to training at the club on Thursday, sources have told ESPN FC.

Sterling, 20, did not report for preseason training on Wednesday, citing illness amid intense speculation over his Anfield future.

The England international's absence came 24 hours after he informed Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers that he did not feel in the right frame of mind to go on Liverpool's preseason tour of the Far East and Australia which they are due to depart for this weekend.

Sources told ESPN FC on Wednesday that Sterling is unhappy at how he was asked to play out of position on so many occasions last season.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes the way the whole affair could be causing long-lasting damage to Sterling's reputation.

His future has dominated this summer's transfer window with Sterling turning down a new deal at Liverpool and Manchester City seeing two bids rejected.

City remain keen on Sterling and Liverpool are bracing themselves for a third offer in the region of their £50 million valuation for the attacker.

However, Sterling is expected to return to training on Thursday with Liverpool determined he goes on tour unless City meet their valuation for the player.
