Mats Hummels has vowed to stay with Borussia Dortmund for another year despite saying he was flattered that Manchester United wanted him.
Hummels, 26, emerged as Louis van Gaal's main target as the United manager looked for an experienced centre-back last summer.
Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc said in May that he was confident Hummels would stay, and the World Cup winner has confirmed his intention to remain with the 2013 Champions League finalists.
But Hummels did not commit his long-term future to the club as he hinted he may consider his position again in 12 months' time, when he will enter the last year of his contract at the Westfalenstadion.
"There have always been rumours about almost every one of our players, but I decided not to make the move this year," he told reporters in Singapore.
"Of course when the big clubs are interested, and Manchester United is one of the biggest clubs in the world, it's an honour. But I decided I wanted to stay here.
"I can only say that I am now committed to giving my best for Dortmund. When I came in 2009, I never decided I'll be here for five years or seven years.
"I thought I might go back to Bayern Munich from where I came after a year or two. But here I am still part of the club and committed to taking it to greater heights."
Dortmund have lost key players such as Robert Lewandowski and Mario Gotze to Bayern in previous years, while Marco Reus and Ilkay Gundogan have also been linked with moves away.
United have switched their attention from Hummels to Sergio Ramos, and have had a €40 million offer for the Spain international rejected by Real Madrid.
Following a disappointing 2014-15 campaign which saw BVB finish seventh after being bottom of the table in January, Hummels said that the 2011 and 2012 Bundesliga champions cannot afford to have a poor start.
"We don't want anywhere near a terrible half year in the new season like we had in 2014-15," he added. "We started badly in the league last season and then developed confidence problems.
"It took us a lot of time to regain self-belief. Also, we were unlucky that some key players -- such as Ilkay -- missed out due to injury."
