Man United's Robin van Persie too expensive for Galatasaray

Galatasaray boss Hamza Hamzaoglu has said the club cannot afford to sign Robin van Persie from Manchester United.

The Turkish club had been linked with a move for Van Persie, whose future at United is uncertain, despite the anticipated cost of signing Netherlands international.

Hamzaoglu had told Fanatik earlier this week: "We want to add a star to our squad who will make the fans happy and take the team a step forwards.

"Van Persie is not someone managers can say 'no' to, but the budget is important. We hope we can agree a reasonable price. We will give it as much time as we can."

However, Hamzaoglu has since said the 31-year-old is no longer a target for the Turkish Super Lig champions.

"Robin van Persie is not on our agenda," Spor 3 quotes him as saying. "The costs are very high. This year, we will be a little more careful."

Van Persie has one year remaining on his contract at Old Trafford and has been linked with an exit after a disappointing first season under Louis van Gaal, despite the United boss having made the player his captain when in charge of the Dutch national team.

Former Netherlands star Ronald de Boer has told Van Persie he must weigh up his options carefully.

De Boer wrote in a column for Voetbal International: "Van Persie is at a crossroads."

He emphasised that the striker is "only 31 years old" and said: "It is precisely at this age that it is important that you play every week."

De Boer said it was possible that Van Persie would re-establish himself as first choice at United but suggested that, with Euro 2016 on the horizon, he should consider following in the footsteps of Wesley Sneijder.

Sneijder, who left Inter Milan for Galatasaray in 2013, played a key role for the Dutch national side at the 2014 World Cup after recovering his form.

"Van Persie can learn from Sneijder's example," De Boer said. "Wesley flicked the switch a year before the World Cup in Brazil. For Wesley, the realisation came just in time -- he has extended his career with them.

"I am convinced that Van Persie can do that too. Robin can still be of great value to the Oranje."
