Robin van Persie dispels Lazio rumours amid Manchester United exit talk

Robin van Persie has explained that he visited Rome for a holiday, rather than to set up a move to Lazio.

There were reports that the Serie A club were trying to sign the Manchester United striker after he was seen in the Italian capital.

But Lazio president Claudio Lotito called them "rubbish" and sporting director Igli Tare said on Monday that they cannot afford Van Persie.

And now the Netherlands international has moved to clarify why he was in Rome.

"All the rumours about Rome as a city are true: it is a beautiful place," Van Persie told Voetbal International.

"I have a life away from football and I always wanted to visit Rome with my wife and this was our chance. We enjoyed it very much."

United manager Louis van Gaal has admitted he cannot guarantee that Van Persie will be at Old Trafford again next season after the striker only scored 10 goals in the worst of his three seasons for the club.

And the 31-year-old, who only has one year left on his contract, has said he may look to move to get first-team football.

Champions League finalists Juventus have also been linked with Van Persie.
