Benedikt Howedes won't base Schalke decision on next coach

Schalke captain Benedikt Howedes says his future at the club does not hinge on the appointment of a new coach.

Howedes, 27, is under contract at the Royal Blues until 2017, but reportedly has a €17.5 million release clause which can be triggered until mid-June.

The Germany international has remained quiet regarding his plans for next season, but in the past has spoken of wanting to one day move abroad.

A turbulent run-in to the Bundesliga season resulted in the resignation of Roberto Di Matteo after Schalke finished sixth and outside of the Champions League positions for the first time since the 2010-2011 campaign.

The Royal Blues are currently without a coach, but have been linked with Belgium boss Marc Wilmots, who said he will decide his future after the upcoming Euro 2016 qualifiers.

However, Howedes, who is currently on holiday in Greece, told Bild his future is not dependent on the appointment of a new Schalke coach.

"I was always honest, never pledged my loyalty. Currently I am still mulling my future and have not made a decision," he said. "There need to be changes at Schalke so that the club can be successful. But my decision will not hinge on who will be the next coach or which players will be signed."

It remains unclear whether Howedes, who has been at Schalke for all of his professional career, will still be at the club when they start preseason on June 28.

According to kicker, the centre-back has received concrete offers from several clubs from England and Italy, with one of them said to be Arsenal, where he could link-up with fellow World Cup winners Mesut Ozil, Per Mertesacker and perhaps Lukas Podolski.

Howedes is currently sidelined with an ankle injury sustained towards the end of the season, but is set to return to training later this summer.
