Leicester snap up defender Christian Fuchs on free transfer

Leicester City have signed Austria captain Christian Fuchs on a free transfer.

Fuchs, 29, had been at Schalke for four years, but after not being offered a new contract by the club he has penned a three-year deal with Leicester.

The left-back leaves the Bundesliga after making 183 appearances in the division for Bochum and Mainz, as well as Schalke, and is now looking forward to playing in England.

"I'm happy that I've signed for Leicester City. It was always a goal for me to play in the Premier League, and I'm happy that this dream has come true," Fuchs, whose surname translates into Fox, told the Foxes' official website.

He added: "Everybody watches the Premier League. I think it's the best league in the world. Leicester City is a new experience and a new challenge for me."

Fuchs, who has won 66 caps for Austria, had been made surplus to requirements by Schalke last summer but opted to stay at the club.

He went on to play in 25 Bundesliga games this season and also made five Champions League appearances.

Fuchs is set to link up with his new Leicester teammates at the club's preseason camp in his native Austria.

His arrival in the Premier League from the Bundesliga follows that of Austria teammate Sebastian Prodl, who joined Watford on a free transfer from Werder Bremen earlier this week, while Tottenham signed Kevin Wimmer from Cologne last month.
