Mauro Icardi signs new Inter Milan contract through 2019

Inter Milan have announced that striker Mauro Icardi has agreed to terms on a new deal with the club through June 2019.

The Argentine striker tied Luca Toni for the Serie A lead in goals scored during the 2014-15 campaign.

"I never thought I would do so well -- I'm delighted," Icardi said. "I always train to get better and better, then it is credit to the team for putting me in the positions to score goals and to get me to this important milestone."

Despite interest from clubs across Europe including Atletico Madrid, Icardi's agent had said as recently as Wednesday that the 22-year-old wanted to stay with Inter.

Icardi's success on the field aside, it was a subpar season for Inter in Serie A. The Roberto Mancini-led club will look to build on the striker's individual success as they attempt to improve on a seventh-place finish in the league that saw them miss out on Champions League and Europa League places.

"All players want to be in the Champions League, but I'm happy here at Inter," Icardi told the club's official website. "I hope I can qualify for that competition next year with a great Nerazzurri side."
