Liverpool cancel Raheem Sterling talks over agent's comments - sources

Liverpool have cancelled a planned meeting regarding Raheem Sterling's future following controversial remarks made by his agent in a newspaper interview, sources have confirmed to ESPN FC.

The player's agent, Aidy Ward, was reported to have told the London Evening Standard on Thursday that Sterling "would not sign a new contract for £900,000 a week" at Anfield.

He was also quoted indicating that Sterling, 20, would be seeking a transfer as well as criticising the club, although the agent has disputed the words attributed to him.

Ward was set to meet Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers and chief executive Ian Ayre on Friday but, in light of the Evening Standard report, that has now been called off.

Sources said the club feel that the agent's decision to go public with such a clear stance has rendered the meeting pointless.

ESPN FC has also been told that Liverpool rejected an enquiry from Manchester United for Sterling and said the player is not for sale.

The England winger, who earns £35,000 a week, has rejected a new deal worth £100,000 a week, which would run until 2020.

Sterling, whose current deal runs until 2017, was heckled at the launch of the Reds' new kit in April, and booed as he collected the club's young player of the year prize at their end of season awards night on Tuesday.
