Memphis Depay targeted by Liverpool as well as Manchester United - sources

Liverpool are to rival Manchester United for the signature of PSV Eindhoven forward Memphis Depay, sources have told ESPN FC.

Depay, 21, has been linked with a big-money transfer this summer, after his 20 goals in 27 league appearances this season helped PSV to seal the Eredivisie title at the weekend.

PSV's sporting director, Marcel Brands, said on Monday that United, Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur are all in the hunt for Depay.

Depay worked under current United boss Louis van Gaal with Netherlands at last summer's World Cup, and the Dutch coach has been tipped to make a move for his services.

"We have had a telephone call from them about him," Brands said, according to the BBC. "But no talks have been held. Several top clubs have expressed interest."

However, the Guardian reports Depay "is a target" of Liverpool while the Daily Mirror says the club have made "preliminary contact" about a deal.

The Daily Mail, though, claims a failure to qualify for the Champions League, with the club currently fifth in the table, could jeopardise a possible agreement.

Tottenham failed with an offer for Depay last summer and PSV have warned it will take at least €25m to clinch his signature.

PSV Eindhoven general manager Toon Gerbrands said on nu.nl: "We have given an indication of the price for Depay, which is probably more than €25m. Therefore we can have no quibbles with Depay's management [over the price].

Gerbrands added: "Depay must first reach an agreement with a club and if that club are willing to pay the transfer fee then he can leave quickly."
