Man United will offer Chicharito to Southampton to sign Clyne - sources

Manchester United will offer Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez to Southampton in a bid to try and beat Chelsea to the signing of highly-rated right-back Nathaniel Clyne, sources have told ESPN FC.

Clyne, 24, has long been an Old Trafford target, and he has repeatedly turned down offers of a contract extension on his current deal which ends in 2016.

That means Southampton may have to consider a sale this summer, with the Saints thought to value the England international -- who wants to be playing Champions League football -- at around £20 million.

United had been favourites to sign the defender, but that has been complicated by Chelsea's growing interest, having scouted Clyne considerably over the past few weeks.

Chelsea's interest may result in a bidding war, but sources have told ESPN FC that United's hierarchy hope that offering Hernandez can boost their own discussions with Southampton.

With Louis van Gaal making it clear there is no real place for the Mexico international in his United team, Hernandez has suffered a disappointing season on loan at Real Madrid, and the striker's wish is to return to the Premier League.

The 26-year-old has already reportedly rejected offers from the MLS, and a club like Southampton could offer the ideal opportunity given that he would likely be a regular starter at an upwardly mobile club.

Even if Clyne does not ultimately go to United, a deal could still be struck between the two clubs for Hernandez.

Otherwise, Van Gaal has identified right-back as a key area to strengthen this summer, as well as centre-half and defensive midfield. The club may also move for another forward option depending on the futures of Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao.

Elsewhere, United plan to pursue interest in Mats Hummels, and sources have told ESPN FC that Van Gaal may again consider Nigel De Jong as a defensive midfield option given his long-time trust in the player.
