Atletico Madrid to keep Southampton loanee Toby Alderweireld - Caminero

On-loan Southampton defender Toby Alderweireld will be at Atletico Madrid next season, according to sporting director Jose Luis Caminero.

Alderweireld joined Southampton last summer on a season-long deal and has impressed for the club this campaign, helping them to sixth in the Premier League.

In March, the 26-year-old Belgium international suggested he could join Tottenham Hotspur in the summer.

However, La Liga holders Atletico intend to retain his services for the 2015-16 term, as well as Oliver Torres who is on loan at Porto.

"Our technical staff have been closely following all of the players who are currently out on loan at other clubs," Caminero said.

"We are very happy with the development shown by Alderweireld and Oliver for example -- both players are enjoying a great season with their respective clubs and we are counting on both players for next season.

"In any case, all of the players who are on loan must return to the club when their loan deals come to an end on June 30. We will decide then what is the best option for all concerned."

Caminero also said that the club are delighted that Diego Simeone recently extended his tenure as head coach until 2020.

"He's a natural-born winner, who carries the club deep inside -- he feels this club as if it's his own," Caminero said.

"The club and Diego had the same thing in mind and that makes it much easier to reach an agreement.

"We're delighted with the work he is doing and the way the team has evolved since he came on board in December 2011. It was just a question of time before a new arrangement was reached."
