Ex-Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant set for S.League trial - sources

Former Liverpool and Arsenal winger Jermaine Pennant will arrive in Singapore on Wednesday ahead of a week-long trial at S.League club Tampines Rovers, sources have told ESPN FC.

Pennant, who turns 33 later this month, is currently unattached having left Wigan Athletic at the end of last season.

He trialled at Thai Premier League club Muang Thong United in November but failed to sign a contract.

Pennant will link up with the 2015 S.League runners up, with the aim of earning a contract for this year.

Tampines begin their season on Jan. 27 when they travel to India to face Mohun Bagan in an AFC Champions League qualifier.

Nottingham-born Pennant moved to Arsenal as 16 year old but played only 12 times in the Premier League. His three seasons at Liverpool saw 81 appearances in all competitions, including the 2007 UEFA Champions League final in Athens as the Reds lost 2-1 to AC Milan.

Pennant played in the 2014 Indian Super League for FC Pune City and also had a stint in La Liga with Real Zaragoza in 2009-10. His other English clubs include Birmingham City, Portsmouth and Stoke City.

New Tampines chairman Krishna Ramachandra has embarked on an ambitious recruiting campaign for the 2016 season, bringing in Singapore international goalkeeper Izwan Mahbud in addition to eight other former LionsXII players.

Last month, they signed a deal with Brazilian legend Ronaldinho to set up a youth academy in Singapore in his name.
