Hougang braced for tough S.League battle against struggling Geylang

Hougang United will be aiming to bounce back from their 1-0 defeat to Home United last week when they take on Geylang International in the Great Eastern Yeo's S.League on Friday.

Salim Moin was left fuming after that loss and will expect more from his players against the league's bottom side at the Jalan Besar Stadium.

The Eagles are on a nine-game winless streak, including six defeats, with their last league victory coming back in early May. That has seen Jorg Steinebrunner's side make a swift descent to the cellar.

However, they have managed to reel off draws in their last two matches and Cheetahs defender Delwinder Singh is expecting a tough affair for his side.

"I wouldn't say it's a good time to face them," he told ESPN FC.

"Football is a funny game, one day you're on top of the world with a brilliant victory, but next thing you know, you lose a game that you are supposed to win, so no team is easy at any point of time.

"Geylang are a good team and they have showed that many times this season. They will want to get the points as well but I am sure that whichever team takes the points home, it won't be an easy one."

In captain Jozef Kaplan, Geylang have a leader that Delwinder admires, having turned out alongside the Slovakian two seasons ago. The attacker is Geylang's top scorer with 14 goals in all competitions, including 10 in the league.

"His work rate and never-say-die attitude are just admirable," he explained. "He has been a stand-out for me with his leadership qualities, but we cannot forget they have quality elsewhere in the team as well."

Apart from Kaplan, Delwinder and his fellow defenders will have to keep tabs on Japanese star Bruno Castanheira as well as young forward Shawal Anuar, who has impressed of late after getting a run in the team.

Steinebrunner will miss suspended centre-back Hafiz Osman, while Salim should have a near-full strength squad to pick from as they try to get back to winning ways.

Consistency has been a problem for Hougang this season even though their performances have generally improved after the mid-season break, leaving them in eighth place. They have struggled to put together an unbeaten run and Delwinder hopes they can do better, with the season soon drawing to a close.

"As a team, we know what we can do and we will work towards our strengths and do better in terms of results and not dropping points anymore," asserted the 23-year-old, who was a mid-season signing.

"Personally, I think we are capable of fighting for a mid-table finish - probably fifth or sixth - but our [more immediate] target now is to collect points from our remaining games and climb as high as possible."
