Weaver urges Warriors to bury S.League negatives and bounce back

Warriors FC coach Alex Weaver has urged his side to stay mentally strong as they look to arrest an alarming run of form and get their Great Eastern Yeo's S.League title bid back on track.

The reigning champions are currently third in the standings but four consecutive defeats in all competition over the past fortnight, have left them four points behind leaders Brunei DPMM FC, as well as eliminated from the RHB Singapore Cup.

This Saturday, they will be hoping to get back to winning ways at the Choa Chu Kang Stadium when they entertain bottom side Geylang International.

On paper, it looks like a game they should be comfortably winning, but that was also the case last Sunday when they took on Harimau Muda, only to suffer a shock 2-9 defeat to their Malaysian counterparts.

While they failed to score in their first game since the departure of Argentine ace Nicolas Velez, it was an inept display at the back that posed more problems for Weaver.

But the Englishman believes his charges can get back on track if they rediscover the aspects of their game that they were doing well in the earlier parts of the season.

"The players must know that they need to work extremely hard," he said. "By that, I mean working hard with their thinking and remembering all the positive performances we have had.

"It's easy to slip into negative thinking right now when everybody's hurting, but we must reinforce the positive elements and take on responsibility."

The ex-Hougang United boss also admitted that his side would have to reshuffle the pack, with Velez no longer at their disposal, but is confident they can show what they are capable of on Saturday.

"The dynamic of the team has changed but we still have many strengths and we need to focus on these.

"There are certain things we have worked on in training and I'm sure we will come back and do well against Geylang."

Saturday's game is shaping up to be a keenly-contested one, considering the Eagles are also desperately in need of a positive result.

Following a four-match unbeaten run between May and July, Jorg Steinebrunner's charges have now lost seven of their last eight matches.

Luck seemed to have abandoned the Eastern outfit, as they were on the receiving end of several controversial refereeing decisions in recent weeks.

However, Steinebrunner will be aware how important it is that his side turn the corner soon if they are to avoid an embarrassing bottom-place finish come the end of the campaign.

While Geylang have only won three games in the league so far this season, one of those came against Warriors when two-goal hero Jozef Kaplan inspired them to a 3-1 triumph at the Bedok Stadium back in May.
