S.League: Weaver backs Warriors to cope without striker Velez

Warriors FC coach Alex Weaver believes his side can continue to challenge for the Great Eastern Yeo's S.League title despite the departure of Argentinean star Nicolas Velez.

Velez, who was the league's Young Player of the Year in 2014, played his final game for the club in Wednesday's 2-0 defeat to Brunei DPMM FC at the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium.

The 25-year-old has since completed his move to Indian Super League outfit NorthEast United, leaving a huge void to fill considering his impressive strike rate of 28 league goals in the past one and a half seasons.

Next up for Warriors, is a clash with Harimau Muda at the Choa Chu Kang Stadium on Sunday evening, where all eyes will be on how they line up for the first time since the departure of the talismanic striker.

Nonetheless, the Warriors still possess a number of dangerous attacking options in the form of Singapore international Fazrul Nawaz, Croatian import Miroslav Pejic and playmaker Hafiz Rahim.

And Weaver believes such quality options, as well as a possible tactical shuffle, could see them do fine even without Velez.

"We will miss him," said the Englishman. "He is a good player and can make the difference in games. We will regroup and look at certain things tactically.

"We might have to change a few things on how we go about our games, but we will be fine as we have a good dressing room and a good group of players."

So far this season, the Warriors have been shaping up as legitimate title contenders and are currently just two points behind leaders Albirex Niigata (S) with a game in hand.

However, Weaver will undoubtedly be trying to arrest their poor recent run of form, following five defeats in their past seven outings in all competition.

Likewise, Harimau Muda coach Razip Ismail will also be demanding improvement from his charges following a 1-0 home loss to Hougang United on Wednesday.

Following a slow start to 2015, the Young Tigers looked to have turned the corner after an impressive run of four wins and a draw against the likes of Home United and arch-rivals Courts Young Lions.

But they have since gone back to their old ways and, apart from an impressive 1-0 triumph at Albirex, the Young Tigers have been beaten in four of their past five matches.

In the previous meeting between the two teams earlier this year, Velez netted twice to hand Warriors a 3-1 win at the Hang Jebat Stadium.
