S.League: Young Lions confident of good showing against Brunei DPMM

Courts Young Lions playmaker Adam Swandi is undaunted by the prospect of facing up to heavyweights Brunei DPMM as both teams prepare to clash this Sunday in the Great Eastern Yeo's S.League.

The Bruneian side have a stellar record at the Hassanal Bolkiah this season, having won five and drawn two of the eight matches on home soil.

Steve Kean's men will also be eager to take all three points, which will see them displace Albirex Niigata (S) at the top of the table as they vie to win their first S.League title.

However, Juergen Raab's young charges will be no pushovers, having pulled off some good results since the league resumed in July following a three-month break.

Three victories and two draws from seven matches is the result of that good run, with their latest win over Geylang International lifting them off the foot of the table.

League giants Home United and Warriors FC have also been upset this season, while DPMM themselves were held 1-1 last month.

And Adam feels that such results have given the Young Lions the belief that they can give their more illustrious opponents a run for their money.

"I think we can match any team in the league if we play to our potential, if every single player gives 100 per cent," he asserted.

"Like coach said, if we play an away game and the game hasn't started, we still have one point. So we'll go there and show what we can do; we know they are a good side, but we'll prove to them and everyone [else] that we can play football."

The 19-year-old also pointed to the determination of the team to prove themselves as the main factor behind their improved form, off the back of a poor start to the season and a dismal SEA Games showing.

"I think it's been down to the players' commitment in training and even the coaches and the backroom staff because they've been supporting us [throughout]," he explained.

"It's been a tough journey in the SEA Games, so we are here to prove that we are no pushovers. We are still in the league and we can make a difference."

However, Raab has admitted that the Young Lions do have to improve their efficiency in front of goal if they want to continue their good run of form.

Their poor shooting was costly two matches ago in a 1-0 loss to Albirex, while it meant that their victory against Geylang was not as large as it could have been.

"Against Albirex, we had 13 shots and on the target was only one shot," the German said after beating the Eagles. "That is a little bit [of a] problem to improve [on]; you see the same now in this match. We have to work on this, that's a question of training and technique and the confidence in the situation."
