Velez's last-gasp winner against Stags reignites Warriors' S.League title bid

Warriors FC ended their three-game winless run in the Great Eastern Yeo's S.League on Friday evening after a stunning come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Tampines Rovers.

Although Rodrigo Tosi had fired the Stags ahead at the Choa Chu Kang Stadium in the 48th minute, Miroslav Pejic looked to have rescued a point for the hosts with a long-range screamer with five minutes remaining.

But remarkably, just three minutes later, Nicolas Velez curled a sublime effort into the top corner to complete the comeback for Warriors and hand them maximum points.

The result comes as a huge boost for Warriors' title bid following their disappointing recent run of form, although it initially looked as though that would continue on Friday.

Following a goalless first half, Tosi handed Tampines the lead when he dispossessed Daniel Bennett and charged towards goal, before clinically drilling a shot into the bottom corner from an acute angle.

The Stags had opportunities to add to their tally but Firdaus Idros and Shaiful Esah both sent excellent attempts crashing against the bar, although Warriors striker Fazrul Nawaz was also unlucky to have been denied by the woodwork.

Nonetheless, the equaliser finally arrived in the 85th minute when Rodrigo Pacheco could only punch the ball to Pejic, who proceeded to send an unstoppable 30-yard drive into the back of the net.

Although the hosts would probably have been content with a draw, it got even better for them three minutes from the end. Velez was given plenty of room on the edge of the box, and proceeded to net the winner with a lovely strike that left Pacheco with no chance.

Admitting it was important for his side to end their run of disappointing results, Warriors coach Alex Weaver was full of praise for his men at the final whistle.

"I thought this was a really good game and a great advertisement for the S.League," he said.

"It took a mistake to break us down and it then took something special for us to break them down.

"The most satisfying aspect was how well we did what we wanted to achieve tactically.

"It was a very important win, especially due to the run of results we've had recently."

Meanwhile, Tampines boss V. Sundramoorthy wanted his charges to remain positive despite a defeat that could ultimately prove pivotal in the title race.

"It's very hard to accept this defeat and I definitely feel we deserved at least a point from this match," he said.

"But this is the way football is sometimes -- what's important for us now is to pick ourselves up for the next game."
