Young Lions topple Harimau Muda to move off bottom of S.League table

The Courts Young Lions picked up only their third victory of the 2015 Great Eastern Yeo's S.League season on Monday night as they edged in-form Harimau Muda 3-2 at the Hang Jebat Stadium.

The thrilling triumph lifted the Young Lions off the foot of the table and extended their unbeaten streak to four games as they continued their mini revival.

They were aided by Razip Ismail's charges shooting themselves in the foot for the opening two goals, the first of which came after just six minutes on the clock.

Goalkeeper Farhan Abu Bakar, the only change in the starting line-up, slipped at the worst possible moment after controlling Irfan Zakaria's innocuous back pass.

Adam Swandi snaffled the loose ball in a flash and gleefully tapped it past the stranded Farhan from seven yards to give his side the lead in Malacca.

The second gift arrived on 36 minutes when centre-back Annas Rahmat handled a shot in the box. Up stepped Amy Recha to coolly convert for his first goal of the season and double the advantage.

Sheikh Abdul Hadi also saw an effort cleared off the line by Azrul Nizam Muhammad, although the home side actually had more opportunities throughout.

Juergen Raab's men were up against a team that managed five wins from their last seven matches, but were fortunate their opponents were largely wasteful.

Faizat Ghazali forced Rudy Khairullah into a good save early on while further chances were spurned by Adam Nor Azlin, Syahrul Azwari, Annas, Irfan and Syazwan Andik.

Faizat came close again in the 43rd minute, but his header was pushed onto the post by Rudy before the custodian claimed the rebound.

It was virtually one-way traffic after the break and Arif Anwar fluffed a gilt-edged opportunity on the hour mark, missing from close range after being set up by Faizat.

Faizat then struck a free kick narrowly over, before Arif redeemed himself in the 68th minute.

As Ashmawi Yakin's cross came in, the forward found himself with plenty of room to execute an overhead kick and halve the deficit.

Rudy then stopped Annas's header from creeping over, before Faizat wasted yet another chance by taking too long to shoot.

As these things tend to go, the Young Tigers were punished with five minutes of regulation time remaining.

It stemmed from yet another error as an alert Amy robbed Syawal Nordin and played a neat one-two with Suria Prakash before finishing off the move to wrap up victory.

But disaster very nearly struck when Rudy conceded a penalty by fouling Syafwan Syahlan in injury time, leaving Arif to complete his brace from the spot.

That sparked the throwing of the kitchen sink from Harimau Muda and only a fine stop from Rudy, as well as one last miss from Syawal, let the Young Lions off the hook as they held on for a hard-fought success.
