S.League: Home come from behind to claim draw against 10-man Balestier

Home United continued to struggle in the Great Eastern-Yeo's S.League despite coming from behind to hold Balestier Khalsa 1-1 at the Toa Payoh Stadium on Monday evening.

Miroslav Kristic scored the opener just before half time, but was then sent off midway through the second half, paving the way for the visitors to grab an instant equaliser through Azhar Sairudin.

The Protectors piled on pressure late on, but eventually failed to find the winner as they find themselves languishing in the bottom half of the table and trailing leaders Albirex Niigata (S) by ten points.

After a couple of gritty draws against Brunei DPMM and Warriors FC, Home carried their momentum into this game as Kamel Ramdani teed up Ken Ilsø inside the six-yard box in the sixth minute, but the Danish forward's shot was superbly kept out by Balestier keeper Zaiful Nizam.

That was a wake-up call for Balestier as they created a couple of opportunities thereafter.

First, Zulkiffli Hassim saw his close-range shot tipped over by Home custodian Shahril Jantan, before Igor Cerina headed the resulting corner narrowly wide.

The home side's efforts were rewarded seven minutes before the break as they broke the deadlock in fortuitous fashion.

Shahril rushed out of goal in an attempt to get a touch on Zulkiffli's deflected shot, but only succeeded in punching the ball into the back of an onrushing Kristic to see it bobble into an empty net.

However the game was turned on its head 17 minutes after the restart as goalscorer Kristic turned from hero to zero by getting a straight red for an alleged flailing elbow on Home defender Abdil Qaiyyim.

Within two minutes of the incident, Home made it one apiece after Azhar tapped in the rebound, from captain Juma'at Jantan's thunderous 30-yard drive.

With the numerical advantage, the Protectors pushed on for the winner in the final 15 minutes but Ilsø, Ramdani and substitute Masrezwan Masturi all failed to take their chances.

Balestier could have punished the visitors for their profligacy deep into injury time, but Cerina's header from Yusiskandar Yusop's free kick sailed agonisingly wide of the post with seconds left on the clock.

Both sides claimed a share of the spoils in the end as the coaches lamented what could have been if things had gone their way.

"I don't know what happened (for the red card)," said Balestier's Marko Kraljevic. "My player was going through one-on-one and suddenly the referee blew the whistle and we went down to 10 men.

"We could match them (before the sending-off), but at the end of day I'm happy with the draw after we went down to 10 men."

"Frustrating is the word which I'll use to describe tonight," said Home counterpart Philippe Aw. "That has been the story of our season so far... we dominate but don't score, then out of nothing the opponents score.

"We have seven draws now and if we convert half of them into wins, we would be on top of the league. This should have been three points in the bag for us."

Home will next host Harimau Muda at the Yishun Stadium on Thursday, while Balestier will take on Hougang United in a televised clash at the Jalan Besar Stadium a day later.
