Kraljevic for Balestier S.League title charge ahead of Harimau Muda clash

Balestier Khalsa coach Marko Kraljevic believes his side can continue to march up the table and challenge for the Great Eastern Yeo's S.League title.

The Tigers recorded an impressive 1-0 win over Albirex Niigata (S) on Thursday evening which, coupled with leaders Warriors FC's shock loss to Courts Young Lions, means they are now just seven points off the top of the table.

In recent times, Balestier have been no strangers to silverware having won the League Cup in 2013, which was followed up by a Singapore Cup triumph last season.

However, they appear to be taking the next step by establishing themselves as a genuine title contender in the S.League, something which Kraljevic believes is not beyond them.

"Of course, we believe we are title contenders," he said. "We definitely feel we are up there with the rest of the teams.

"On our day, we feel we can challenge anyone and we are very comfortable even when we take on the big sides.

"We must not forget that we brought in five to six new players at the start of the season, so we needed time to get to know each other.

"But I believe with each day we are getting better."

One of the key factors behind the Tigers' performances this season has been the impressive form of goalkeeper Zaiful Nizam, who was recently rewarded by being called up to the Singapore Select XI squad for the Barclays Asia Trophy.

While Zaiful is now widely regarded as one of Singapore's top three goalkeepers along with Hassan Sunny and Izwan Mahbud, the 28-year-old is not about to rest on his laurels.

"We don't want to put unnecessary pressure on ourselves," he said. "But we definitely want to maintain our performances and establish ourselves in the top four.

"I'm happy with my performances this season and I believe in myself. I will continue working hard because if you don't push yourself, no one is going to push you."

Balestier are favourites to extend their winning run on Monday when they take on Harimau Muda at the Toa Payoh Stadium, although they would do well not to underestimate the Malaysian outfit.

After a slow start to the season, the Young Tigers have now won four of their last five matches and find themselves seventh on the table. They are ahead of Geylang International, Hougang United and Courts Young Lions.

They also showed tremendous spirit on Friday to come from behind and record a 2-1 win over Geylang at the Jalan Besar Stadium, courtesy Syafwan Syahlan's equaliser and a Kento Fukuda own-goal.
